Service areas in North Pinellas County

We work across the north of Pinellas County, from Tarpon Springs at the top of the county down to the north of Clearwater. The routes are kept tight on purpose, because a short drive between properties is what lets a schedule hold from one week to the next.

Where we work in Pinellas County

Every community on this list is in the north of the county, and that is deliberate. A tight route is what makes a weekly schedule realistic through the growing season, when a missed week shows on the lawn by the weekend.

Each community has a page of its own with what the lawns there have to deal with and which of the eight services get used most on those streets. If your street sits just outside the list, call and ask before you assume we do not come out to it.

The 10 communities we cover

These are not copies of one page with the town name swapped in. Each page describes what the yards in that community are actually like, because a lawn on a shaded historic lot and a lawn on an open irrigated one are two jobs.

Tarpon Springs

Tarpon Springs sits at the top of the county between the Gulf and Lake Tarpon. The lots run from small historic ones near the Sponge Docks to larger properties out toward the lake, and the two do not want the same visit.

Palm Harbor

Palm Harbor is unincorporated and covers a lot of ground, from the Gulf side across to Lake Tarpon. Much of it was built out from the 1970s onward, so the oaks are mature and the shade under them is deep enough to thin the grass.

Dunedin

Dunedin runs along the Gulf just north of Clearwater, with older streets, smaller lots and sidewalks on most of them. Yards near the water take salt spray, and St. Augustine handles that better than most grasses.

Oldsmar

Oldsmar sits at the north end of Old Tampa Bay on the flattest ground in our area. Low lying yards here hold water after a summer storm, and cutting saturated ground tears the turf, so those visits get moved rather than forced.

Safety Harbor

Safety Harbor is on the west shore of Old Tampa Bay, with older streets around the waterfront and downtown and newer subdivisions inland. The canopy near the bay puts a lot of these lawns in part shade for most of the day.

East Lake

East Lake runs along East Lake Road on the county line, and much of it is newer subdivisions with irrigation and common areas. Where a community is deed restricted, the front yard has a standard it has to keep to.

Ozona

Ozona is a small waterfront community between Palm Harbor and Crystal Beach. The narrow lanes, heavy tree cover and tight lots mean more trimming by hand and less open mowing than a subdivision lot needs.

Crystal Beach

Crystal Beach is a small community right on the Gulf, north of Ozona. It is about as close to salt water as a lawn in this county gets, and salt spray on top of sandy soil is what the grass here lives with.

Countryside

Countryside is the area around Countryside Boulevard in the north of Clearwater, largely built through the 1970s and 1980s. The lots are regular, the plantings are mature, and the hedges have usually been there as long as the house.

North Clearwater

North Clearwater covers the neighborhoods above the city center, between Countryside and Old Tampa Bay. Lot sizes and lawn ages vary a good deal from one street to the next, so the visit is set property by property.

03 Local conditions

What every lawn in this county has in common

The communities differ, but four things are true of a yard almost anywhere in North Pinellas, and all four change how a lawn should be cut and looked after.

Most lawns here are St. Augustine

It is the grass that suits sandy soil, heat and some salt, and it is the one that suffers most from being cut short. Cut high it shades its own soil, holds moisture and keeps most weed seed in the dark.

The wet season runs June to September

It rains most afternoons, growth is at its hardest, and saturated ground cannot be mowed without tearing the turf. A wet day moves the visit and does not cancel it.

Salt reaches further inland than people expect

Yards near the Gulf and near Old Tampa Bay take salt spray, and some irrigation water carries salt as well. Deep roots are the defense, and deep roots come from cutting high.

Watering is limited all year

Pinellas County and the water management district set year round limits on landscape irrigation, and the allowed days can change. Check the current rule with the county or your city before you set a timer.

What that adds up to on a visit

A lawn cut at the top of the range for its grass needs less water than the same lawn cut short, which matters a great deal where the watering days are limited. It also holds its color longer through May, which is the hardest month of the year on a Florida lawn.

The other half of it is the clippings. Yard debris left on a driveway washes into a storm drain and out toward the water, so the hard surfaces get blown back onto the lawn before the crew leaves. That is part of the Landscape Best Management Practices we are certified in.
